Re: m37 variants
As a note, this info comes from John Zentmyer's great pamphlet on the M37, "The Production Story, 1949-1968".
Re: m37 variants
thanks tinmedic thats great I will have to get a copy of the production story.
Im shocked by how few b1s received a winch . no numbers on the xm711 and looks like the the b1 chassis designation of m53 is omitted. were there xm711s built on both the 112in wheel base of the m53(bi chassis truck) and the 126in wb of the m56?

Re: m37 variants
From how I read it, all XM711's were built on the M53B1 chassis. I cant find any info that says they were built on the LWB chassis. As far as the M53 dual chassis, are you referring to the 6x6 model?
Re: m37 variants
I will get the Canadian numbers tonight.
Re: m37 variants
It's interesting to notice that the LWB M37 was for export yet the M56 cab & chassis series uses the lwb chassis for the AF & Navy crash trucks and the Army compressor trucks.
Re: m37 variants
canadian numbers would be great!
dont see were I mentioned dual ???
anyways when I look at this xm-711 it looks to me like a 126in wb
I take it the m37 with a wrecker in Its a mad mad mad world is not a xm711

Re: m37 variants
XM711 is definitely on a M53B1 chassis. I would guess that M37 was modified for the movie. Where you wrote "bi chassis" made me think you were referring to a dual chassis.
Re: m37 variants
The pictured truck had its frame extended for a welding unit. That one was sold by John Colwell several years back out of Texas.
Re: m37 variants
thats a bit of work for a welder. frame cut, fish plates, longer pto shaft, fuel/ brake/ hydraulic lines, linkage.......
I read the xm711 had boosted brakes and the heavier springs even though its on the 112in wb chassis did it also get the fish plates like the ones under the ambulance ?

Re: m37 variants
Take a look at this link from when John was selling it. If you notice, it was built on a M37B1 chassis even thought the contract called for an M53B1 chassis.
http://www.vintagemilitarytrucks.com/19 ... recker.htm
The M53B1 chassis' were given re-enforced springs when the contractor installed the tow equipment. I haven't read anything about boosted brakes.

Re: m37 variants
my bad the book stated it did not receive power brakes like the xm708. witch is kinda strange...so you have a 1 yard of dirt approx 1ton power brakes then you have a wrecker say towing an m37 almost 3ton and no power brakes ?........but I guess the 37 is designated to tow 6000lbs
