distributor play

How much up and down play should there be in the 1953 M37 distributor ? the reason I ask is durning a coil replacement I noticed that my distributor has no side to side play , buy about 1/4 " up and down, seemed excessive . I did lube the distributor bushing ,who knows when it was last done . My other question is on the vent lines should you be able to feel air movement at idle ? How can you tell if it is working , I have new lines and NOS air horn with the right fittings . I am trying to somewhat fix the M37 over heated coil blues , had a coil fail at the last car show , I could feel it starting to breakup , parked the MV ,and a no go when we went to leave . I replaced the coil with a fine NEW STAR off shore replacement , as good as new , ya right bob k
