Draft Pads

Post by jim0311 »

Seems like the simpler things give you the most trouble, like how do you get the brake and clutch draft pads on?
Do you cut them or some how slip them over the arms?

They can go ver the pedals if you boil them and use silicone spray. Wear "mechanics" gloves so you can still handle the hot, slippery things :x Make sure you don't have any metal burrs on the pedals also.

There have been comments on the forum in the past dealing with the dreaded pedal pads... debate occasionally occurs over 'installing the pads from the top of the pedal' vs. 'installing the pads from the bottom of pedal' after removing pedal from assembly...

Tips / comments here always appreciated... I'll be into this issue on my truck in the near future.

Please share the technique, I have this to look forward to in the not to distant future.

Please tell us which vendor you bought the draft pads from also, I've read that some of these will not flex enough to install.

This reminds me of the Spongebob episode where Patrick (the pink starfish) is running around with a shoebox with his big "secret" in it. Spngebob spends the episode trying to get him show him the contents. In the end it's .......a string...if you pull the string it lifts a secret compartment to reveal a picture of Spongebob at the Christmas party...... I knew watching that would help me in real life one day !

If I get time, maybe I will post a video of it on youtube but here it is again real quick.

I use some DC4 or Vasoline around the outer edge of the foot pedal portion. DONT NEED MUCH!! Now get a can of CRC ELECTROMOTIVE CLEANER from your auto parts store :) cut the bottom of a plastic soda bottle or use a small container, put the draft pad in it and while looking and breathing away...............spray a good amount into the bottle and get the pad soaking wet!! within 2 min, slide the draft pad on the pedal as quick as you can. get it into position and let it sit and your done.

The CRC swells the rubber for a moment.................Did mine YEARS AGO and EASY!!! They are still on it today :)

If your unsure of the method, its supposed to rain this weekend and if I can find my draft pads, I will do a Vid.

This and a number of other methods work well with the old NOS pads; however don't hold your breath waiting on it to work if you have the new replacement pads. They are made of a different type of material, and so far I've seen no method that works for a successful installation, so naturally I have my doubts that this one will work with the new pads either.

I've installed many NOS pads without issue, they are thinner and have more stretch than the new repros do. It was said the repros were to be made of a compound that was really stretchy so they would be a song to install; NOT.

In light of already knowing this, if you are doing this fabulous demo video using older NOS pads, don't bother, the method is useless with the repro pads. Now if you stumble upon a method that works with the repro pads, I'm all eyes and ears; I've talked to a number of folks that have tried them (new repro pads) as well as our attempts here, have not heard of a single successful installation to date. Good luck.

The ones I tried came from Midwest Military, my understanding is that Vintage Power Wagons has some of the same run. Good luck.

Hey all,
I had to order some spring U bolt nuts for my M-37 as I lost the arch in one of my spring assemblies..........figures right before Memorial Day weekend. So I ordered those and two draft pads from John at Midwest. He mentioned on how to put them on and that when I mentioned that I already knew and believe I have a pretty good method of doing them. When I brought up that all I had done was NOS oneswith no problems and there was some thoughts that the reproduction ones are harder to install as a test and that I wanted to make a video on the "How-too" that he said..............I'll send them for free!!!

I will try and do this right as I think I might have enough spare pedal assemblies to demonstrate two, a NOS one and a Reproduction one.

So since he wants to use the video, I guess I need to put a nice shirt on and clean off the work bench :D
Please lets not put me in for a academy award just yet.

You know maybe I should keep my mouth shut and go into business just installing M-37 draft pads
