Re: Does ORD STOCK NO mean anything??
From about 1941 thru about 1956 the ORD stock number was the system used to stock spare parts for everything the military owned. In the mid 50's they started the switch to the Federal Stock Number (FSN) system (XXXX-XXX-XXXX format). Then again in the 70's they modified the FSN to the National Stock Number (NSN) system often referred to as the NATO system (XXXX-XX-XXX-XXXX format). This is the system currently used. The unique thing about the military stock numbers is they can represent the same part or a suitable substitute made by various vendors to fit the original application for that part. So when you order by that stock number you may or may not get the same original manufacturer's part but the part will fit your application irregardless of the manufacturer's name.
Even though you cannot not order an entire truck using that stock number on the dash plate it does ID that vehicle to a particular stock class and that also helps with locating other parts for it and in the later stock number systems can even match you up to the support publication series.
