Snow traction not so good... I thought

Well, it was a day to move stuff around the place. We recently had some granular wet snow, followed by rain, so the traction conditions were tough. I sold a camper, and so I had to drag it out from behind the barn. My 1988 Chevy V30 pickup made it through the grainy wet snow on top of muddy grass, out to behind the barn...., but it was close. I got the camper on it, and it drove out a bit better. I had to move the M37 over to the neighbor's place, so I could park the camper in the driveway. The M37 started right up, and then we started across towards his place. There were some really soggy areas under the snow. The M37 always maintained forward motion, but I could tell that it was at the limit of traction. I couldn't pick up any speed, and knew that if I stopped, I would be stuck. I was thinking those old NDT's really aren't that good. I parked on the edge of a snowy field. When it was time to bring it back tonight, It didn't want to climb out of the depressions the tires were in. Dang. So I looked at the 4WD selector to see what position it was in. It was only 1/2 way back towards 4 wheel drive! Once I actually had it in 4WD, the M37 had traction like we were on a dry dirt road! Doh! So it seems that in 2WD it had traction similar to my Chevy in 4WD (Granted the Chevy needs tires badly). What a good old truck. H.

We got a foot of snow here in Utah late last week, so I was able to venture out with my M37-took it to work one night, actually, with about 6 inches of snow on the roads. My NDTs are new and had no traction issues at all. I will confess running out of gas on the trip home but had the full jerry can with me so it wasn't a big deal.

For off-roading, it might help to air them down a bit so they spread out more and provide more tread on the surface.

That is good news, I have heard some stories about NTD's, most of them bad. I have always had issues w/ soft/wet grass under snow.
But no pic's is another story!

CT, four wheel drive really does help when you remember to engage it

I am also one of the those that run NDT tread and have never had any problems when used in fresh snow or soft soil but on surfaces like hard packed snow or ice they are just about useless. Mine stay at 40psi most of the time and only deflate to 15 when I am using the truck to plow snow. Got stuck last big blizard while clearing my neighborhood roads but a couple hands full of Black Beauty blast material under the slipping tires had me on the move again. Tried to use chains one year but they slipped on the tires some and cut into the sidewalls so I won't try that again. No snow this season so no recent pix but my Webshots album has several from last big white dump on us.

We in the northeast did not have any real snow this year, but last year the "M" with her NDTS made a point to me.
Our govt sometimes spends our money without much care on how its spent. I also know that lots of research goes into things that they buy for there specific items, such as NDTS. They have been on military vehicles for a long time, now they found something better. So anyhow last year right after Christmas we had about 2' of snow. out came the "M" with NDTS. she went threw alomost anything in 2WD. In fact I pulled an avalanche out of a drif using only 2WD. I did not have any traction issues with the NDTS. I use them on the beach, on the road and in snow, lsat year. I also know there limitation, wet roads. I dont take my "M" out in the rain so I dont have a problem.
