TRANSFER CASE

Good morning,
I recently had my M on the beach, here in Rockaway, NY, in 4WD high. I had the lock out hubs locked in, and drove on the beach for about 1/2 hour. When I got back on hard ground I attempted to shift back to 2WD, but the lever would not move back. I tried backing up, going forward, nothing. I drove back to my house in 4WD and when I arrived I tried again. It went back to 2WD; I unlocked the hubs and all is well. Any thoughts?? I dont use the 4WD alot but living on the beach it smetimes becomes necessary. THANKS BOB

Sounds like something was jammed into your shift linkage for the selector lever and it vibrated its way out on the return trip. The hubs wouldn't have anything to do with it. You should still be able to shift the t-case, regardless of how the hubs were set.

I normally have the truck rolling just slightly (with the clutch pedal depressed) when shifting out of 4WD. Its called gear wrap up from driving on a hard surface for any distance.

As mentioned above the gear train will often wrap up or bind a bit whenever you operate on hard surfaces. Sand unlike mud, snow and ice is not very slippery and gear wrapup can occur there as well. But most likely the initial short distance you drove on the blacktop resulted in the wrapup. As mentioned above making the shift on the roll helps as does unlocking the hubs then rolling a bit. After the long drive home on the hard surface it mayhave been the turns into your driveway that allowed you to shift.
