Well, another fine mess... I checked timing, set a 4 btc, vac is around 17 at idle, just as the book says. I checked the max rpm and it was only 2500 so, I adjusted the governor to 3200, no surge etc. when no load. Test drive gave me a heavy surge under load on hills, I made a spanner tool and readjusted the governor nut 1/4 turn and reset rpm, still surged, I'm now 1 1/2 turns in on the nut and still surging badly under a load. Am I going in the right direction?? I did not take the carb off and check the governor before starting this. Do I know backup and do that?? Possibly something broken in the governor or just more tweeking. I could only get about 40 mph max before, after the first rpm adjustment it ran right up to 45 plus with plenty of power, then the surging started. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem a while back and as long as you are gaining in the direction that your adjusting keep going but what had happened to me was in the process I had forgotten what direction i was turning the adjustment and got all messed up then I removed the carb and went through the proper adjustment procedure for a base line then tweaked it a little at a time then it all straightened out and it is governed to about 54 mph and runs great.

Re: surging under load
I decided to pull the carb and look at the governor, the link I found about Carter carbs doesn't cover the governor I have. I am waiting for a manual from Midwest now. Since I pulled the carb, I checked the inlet and found a piece of what appears to be rubber, most likely from when the previous owner installed the electric fuel pump and added the fuel hose. The piece looked like it was blocking about 2/3 of the inlet orifice. I am beginning to think that maybe the carb was being starved and that was causing the bucking/surging and maybe not the governor or maybe both were contributing. Anyway since I had the carb off, I pulled the intake and exhaust manifolds and replaced the rotted out heat damper and ordered a new exhaust pipe, muffer and tailpipe. Heck, it's only money and I can't take it with me. I could see about being buried in the M37 or creamated in it and have it crushed into an urn shaped billet. I may have to start sleeping in it since the wife is starting to eye the CC charges with suspicion and the comment, "I thought you said it was ready to go when you bought it?" Oh well, one man's restoration is another man's never ending project. Lots of little stuff on the list to do.

I have met many others with m37's and very few that owned them the wife was just more than pleased about it being part of the family but it does seem after time either they warm up to the fact or you sleep in the shop!So good luck to ya. Oh yes it's day to day for me.

Re: surging under load
Good AM,
When I first got my M I had a similar problem, surging under load then stall, it was a rubber hose, old type not to be used with alcohol fuel, that was delaminating internally. changed all the rubber fuel hoses, not a problem since.
good luck BOB
