winch safety brake band assembly

Post by rtkjmk »

Good morning all , I just picked up a lu-4 winch and all assorted parts for my 53 M 37, and I have a few questions before I start the install . I am in need of a safety brake band assembly . The one on my winch got broken by some rough handling on the way home. What does the safety band do ? also what is the procdure for setting up the PTO, the TM 8031-2 is not clear on the backlash . bob k

basically, it keeps the drum from freespoling when taken out of gear.

Cocerning PTO set up; anywhere from .005"-.012" is good on backlash. Depending on the wear patterns that are established on the mating gears, you may have to go a little looser than .012" in order to achieve a quiet running set up, it will not hurt anything to do that. 2 different idler gears were used on these PTO units; one is slightly larger OD than the other. The smaller gear may take only 1 shim to get good backlash while the unit with the larger gear may take 6 shims to come up with the same lash measurement. The easiest way to check it is to set up a dial indicator via the access cover on the passenger side of the trans case for checking.

Charles , Josh ,thanks for the info , I plan on resealing the PTO and winch assembly before I do the install . I plan on replaceing the safey band because the end with the adjustment nut is broken off . My de-clutching handle is also stiff ,so I will also take a look at that when I reseal the unit . I have also been told it's easier to install the PTO when the trans is out of the vehicle . If so , then I am sure going to think about a clutch ,pressure plate and bearing . I think this will be winter project # 9 or is it # 10 I forget , I have a LOT of winter projects to do . I have to try real hard not to get ahead of myself !

PTO can be installed with the trans installed, but you are right it is easier with the trans sitting on the bench. If clutch replacement is an issue at hand; I'd surely do it all at the same time.

A clutch replacement takes about 3 hours, I would allow an extra hour to install the PTO, so from start to finish, about a half day should do it.
