Scored a radio

Post by HingsingM37 »

So my buddy who is moving said he had an old "Army radio" which had been in his garage and he did not feel like taking it along on the move. He asked if I would want it free of charge? I of course said yes. He brought it over and it is a R-174/URR (Angry 5) receiver along with its matching PP308/URR power supply in very nice shape. It even has the mount :)

What's that old saying about coming up "smelling like a rose?" Some folks are just naturally lucky, I guess. Congrats on making the save. :)

It looks like this

Cool thing about that radio is it will work on 6 12 or 24 V. I spent many a summer night camping with the glow of a Grr5's tubes on a six volt latern battery listing to the BBC or VOA or even Sky King.

I'll so be glad to take that off your hands so that you wont have to mess up that beautiful paint job on your truck with some old radio....

Yes it is a cool radio indeed, I fired it up Sunday using a coat hanger for an antenna and I was able to pic up a couple shortwave braodcast. It will need a little TLC. The pots are dirty and I accidently drove the animals insane with some feedback as the RF gain is a little shaky. For now I mounted it in the bed for looks. I'll post a pic this week. Down the road when my antenna is mounted on the truck I will eventually wire it in.

Nice find, David! Funny thing-along with all the mechanical parts we have to hunt down, sometimes these "accessories" just fall into our laps! Enjoy it!
