Fordson Snowmotor, saw that a while back on SS I think. I've pondered what could be done along those lines with modern materials and technology though sometimes the older, simpler ways work better.
I think that is what they call an "Archimedes' screw" machine? The Russians built an "all terrain" vehicle using screw drive some years ago. I think it performed quite well but for some reason, it never went into mass production.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups
The screw drive works well, but there is a lot of wear on the drums.
I understand the Russian (ATV?) was amphibious.( does anyone Know its name or designation?)
I would imagine it would work great on sand, water, gravel, snow, and mud, but don't try to cross a paved road.

My wife loves to cook, bakes fresh cookies for my lunch every week, and now she wants a 15" Mortar.... life is good!
The Russian vehicle was a ZIL. Don't know what model, though. Do a google search on "Fordson Snow-Motor" and you'll find some you-tube clips of both the Fordson and the ZIL.
