1962 M37 Vehicle Identification Number Question

Post by camfen »

I have a 1962 M37 I purchased from GSA and need to get the truck titled. The VIN has only the last 5 digits (65912) on the GSA paperwork. From looking at this forum the VIN should read (2661-65912) which I assume is only stamped on the frame. The glove box tag has only 65912 as unit serial number. What should be listed on the title?
Thanks,
Cameron

If it was me I would not want to confuse the DMV by adding additional numbers to the serial number. If the paperwork matches the plate on the truck you should not have any problems on getting your title. I would check the frame for the correct # so you could register it here.

Agreed! Camfen, check the frame just ahead of the steering box-be prepared to sand away paint and debris to find the number.

My 1962 is 65212, thats what the data plate says and thats what it's registered as. At the plate office keep it simple, don't offer any extra info. and you will get out of there quicker with what you need.

VIN Trouble?

Post by Longhunter7 »

When I titled my M37 here in illinois, they gave me a hard time about the VIN number. They said it was too short a number to be correct!

After a long delay with a phone call to the DOT, they finally accepted the number. You may find it to your benefit to register it as a 1962 Dodge pick-up truck!

Keep it simple for simple people!

I had no trouble at all in obtaining an Illinois title for my M37. It may have helped that it already had a valid Kentucky title and that the clerk who processed the transfer was a veteran. My title actually identifies it as:
Make: Dodge
Model: M37
Body Style: Pickup truck

My Dodge Dakota pickup, on the other hand, was identified as:
Make: Dodge
Model: Dakota
Body Style: Carryall

It would have cost me 25 bucks to get "carryall" changed to "truck," so I let it slide. When I got it retitled here in Georgia, the clerk chuckled and made a comment about "them Yankee city folk" not knowing what a truck is and correctly identified it on the title application. ;)
