I just got finished installing a Howell TBI Electronic Fuel Injection on my 258 I6 in one of my jeeps.
What an incredible difference. They come with a problem prone BBD Carter carburator.
Got me thinking, how about for the M37?
Needs a higher pSI fuel pump, MAP sensor, Computer ( out of an
older Chevy), O2 sensor, all comes with the kit.

I'd love to see it done. Personally, I think with a little work, you could turn that slug of an enigine you guys call the L230 into quite the little screamer... I contemplated stuffing a 225 slant six into my truck and boosting the holy hell out of it just for something different... then it dawned on me that a twin turbo big block is prety different as well, and probably more fun...
first step would be EFI, as you pointed out. Secould would be a real intake and exahust, or, for the really brave among you... try refitting a "modern" head onto it, like, a 225 or, jeep 4.0 head. If you REALLY wanted to get creative, look into slapping a BMW twin cam head with variable valve timing onto it.
second step would be to toss those splindly offset rods and put some real ones in it. upgrade the oiling system to take some more Rs and not spin bearings.
Finally, put a big single, or a pair of twin turbos on it. I bet you could get 400 HP no problem out of the lowly 230 if you made these changes.
Personally, Id try to see what I could do with the stock head first, just for fun, before refitting a modern head onto the block.

Almost any engine can be mated to any transmission with a bit of machine work. It might be as simple as having a bellhousing drilled and tapped for the NP420 pattern. If not, it would only be as complicated as having an adapter plate made. I know the NP435 was put behind slant sixes in trucks, so, whatever modifications are needed to make a 318 fit would probably be the same. for some inspiration, check out this STOCK slant six taking 21 PSI of turbo boost, through a carb, and belting out almost 350 ft-lb of torque!

He has a gorgeous header on it, equal length, long tube. Thats how he's making the power. The turbo looks a bit small to me, he could probably step up a size or two and break into 400 WHP at the cost of some lag. He should move the intercooler to the front of the car as well, could pobably pick up at least 30 WHP doing that, but, that would wreck the sleeper look
EDIT: I just noticed... he only has the 170 slant six... not the 225... if you did teh same mods to a 225, you'd probably break 450 easily, and if you really wanted to spend some cash and time, put EFI and some water injection on it, and shed go north of 500 no problem!
There is power in those engines, it just has to be coaxed out...
