New Military Jeeps with Diesels being delivered to Chrysler

Post by George in MI »

I was driving back from Pittsburgh to northern Michigan and stopped on the Ohio Turnpike to get gas. In front of me was parked a car hauler with military long wheelbase Jeeps. The truck driver said they were being delivered to Chrysler HP near Detroit from Germany. He said they were Diesels.

Anybody know about these?

Hmmmm! Replacements for the HMMWV, perhaps? I sure would like to get one of those single-digit VIN models somewhere down the road. ;)

No not a replacement for the HMMWV as the replacement for that has to meet the new requirements for protecting the passingers area from IEDs.

Probably just going to be used around post or for Range Ops etc.
M37s are HMMWV in my world!

They are built in Austria, like all Chrysler diesel products for non-US markets. I hope the engines are not the italian VM motori that chrysler used in past jeeps or the ones is using in some Egiptian army jeep version of the Wrangler unlimited.
Down here, we've been suffering VM equipped diesel jeeps (cherokees, Grand Cherokees and Libertys) for years since 95 (plus Dodge Caravans) and we have nothing good to say about them.
It was a relief when Chrysler moved on to use Mercedes Benz diesel engines in the Grand Cherokees. A lot better, Now you can say reliability in the same sentence with Diesel Jeep.
I guess the Army is used to have unreliable/maintenance intensive vehicles since they started using the HMMWV. :P

a friend of mine is working on this at Chrysler and they are the M-B diesels I believe. We, sadly, as civilians, will not get them, as they do not meet emissions. On a side note, it will be one of the few road legal vehicles that the military will not voluntarily meet emissions with. the current humvee, as well as several other road wheeled MV's voluntarily comply with emissions.

Manufactured In Egypt....

Post by pfrederi »

Am I missing something here. We are bailing out Chrysler and GM to save American jobs and in turn they are giving jobs to Egyptians to build stuff for our own military....

I guess I am getting too old as I really don't get this...

The Egyptian army was the first that asked Chrysler about the possibility of an army jeep based on the Unlimited, that's why the first J8 versions were built in Egypt.
Now they are built in Austria, although it's better, it's not USA.
Unfortunately, that engine is not MB sourced, it's the dreaded italian VM Motori 2.8, the same that equipped the former Liberty. That's why it don't comply with emissions regulations, MB units on the other side, do conform the emission regulations.

Don't worry too much, I've read in today's headlines that Chrysler is inches away of payments default.
