Started Ralph's engine yesterday.

Post by Carter »

We first tried to get it going Tuesday without success. The carb. he selected from several he had on hand had not been rebuilt correctly by someone in the past and the float was in up side down and the tab was bent way out of any kind of correct adjustment resulting a throughly flooded intake manifold and engine. I took it apart and soaked it in Berryman's Chem-Dip carb cleaner to be put together later with a new set of internals.
Yesterday I took the carb. off of my engine and put that on his now dried out intake, hooked everything back up and after a couple of revolutions of the engine to clear out any remaining flooding, the engine fired and ran, with some tweaking of the carb and timing settings it ran smoothly with no smoke from the exhaust and no unusual engine noises. Just the sound of a smooth running Dodge 230. We had a couple of drips of oil from the valve side plates which only required a couple of turns on the thumb screws and they stopped. No oil leaks from the pan gaskets or the main seals. Success :D We ran it in for several hours at various RPMs, stopped and restarted it several times and then took it for a short run of about 1/4 mile to judge how it ran under load but didn't over rev it as it is still a new engine and needs to be broken in more before being ready to go back on the road.
I am going back Friday to see if Ralph needs help with getting his carb. set correctly then help replacing the floor pans and the front right fender. I have also been getting another 230 ready to put in the red truck I got from him and get that to move under it's own power.
To be continued...

That's great Carter! I know about the flooded intake-what a lousy feeling-glad you got it squared away!

Gary, the intake flooding had us going for a while until we drained about an ounce of gas out the air horn drain plug and shot compressed air into all cyl's. and with the addition of my carb, all went well.

David, I was very pleased to bring another back to life and stood and smiled for about 20 min. watching the fan blades so around and listening to it run. Nothing like having another of my rebuilds running, gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling
