How did you turn out???? Im pretty sure that you were air bound. I usually feed some fuel down into the line to the pump to help get that suction going from the tank. This especially works if you still have a filter up by the voltage regulator like I do. Once back together, I have soldier #2 start the truck while Soldier 1 gives the carb a shot of ether. I know the pump has a hand primer but I truly think its more for getting fuel up into the bowl from the pump and not really drawing it from the tank.

OK, got it running. Heres what happened. I plumbed the pump the same way it was on the old pump. On the old pump the inlet was on the left and outlet on the right, facing the pump. After many times removing the pump I applied air to the gas tank and got fuel after the shut off valve. No problem there. I had a friend put his finger on the fitting at the carb and sure enough he felt suction. Reversed the lines at the pump, hit the priming lever a few times and it started right up. My old pump (it looks original, or old at the very least) was assembled backwards. Checked my online manual and sure enough the inlet is on the right. Go figure. Thanks guys for your help. Didn't see this one coming.

Oh I hate it when that happens. I bet someone rebuilt the old pump and assembled it backwards. Glad you figured it out and got it running again.

Thanks, this one really had me stumped. Lucky that my friend came over to give a hand, an retired truck mechanic. He discovered the suction at carb inlet.

Glad to learn you got it running Bill, I would never have thought of the pump being assembled incorrectly, that is a new one on me.
