From what I have read and heard about them they were to keep the tire in place when airing down the tires for driving in sand or any other place you would use low pressure in the tires.

Interesting idea DJ. And not to say that anyone is wrong and I know what the heck I'm talking about......but if there was ever a situation where the only thing holding the outer split rim to the inner rim was 6 little clips I'd be very afraid. From the stories I've been told and the videos I've seen showing the force generated by a split rim installed incorrectly......those little clips wouldn't have a chance in heck to stop that explosion.
We had a young guy get his head blown completely off his body just a few years back when he installed a split rim wrong on a big dump truck at the farm down the road. Hard to believe those 6 little clips could hold back that kind of force. But it's definitely an interesting topic.....so keep the thoughts coming!! I'm sure with this crew we'll get to the bottom of this one.

Re: Tire Clips Function
Just to clarify here, we DO NOT have split rims. We have split RINGs. Big difference. My local ag tire place will not touch a split rim, but they have no problem doing our split RINGS. These clips have nothing to do with tire chains, or for preventing the ring from blowing off.
My understanding of them is as was said previously, if the tire was aired down, or had a hole shot into it, it would help hold the bead of the tire in place while running flat or aired down.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the correction.....you're right of course.....they are Split Ring and not Split Rim.

If you have ever taken a properly installed ring off changing a tire, you'll understand how well they are on. Takes a bit of prying
