Need info on old school snow tires.....

Loved those studded snow tires! I used 'em on all 4 wheels when stationed in Nebraska. Needed 'em, there, too! By the time I retired from the AF, though, Illinois had outlawed them. They said that they caused too much damage to the roads. I never could figure out their logic, since they were okay to use all around us in Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin...all of which states have better roads than Illinois!

Maryland banned stud tires because they ground the wearing surface off a concrete bridge deck in just a couple of seasons, exposing the underlying material to water and salt resulting in rusted rebar which expanded causing huge potholes and huge seasonal repair expences as well as rust damaged structural steel from salt runoff due to the thru-cracking of the deck slab from rebar rust expansion. The Md. DOT wasn't to concerned with roadway pavement wear as much as it was bridge safety. I worked for the engineering company that did the studies, inspected the damaged bridges, core drilled the decks and then reported the findings to the state and the feds who were splitting the costs of the study with Maryland DOT.

Pa also had outlawed the studded tires. I remember my dad taking a pair of channel lock pliars and pulling the studs out one by one, right after the law went into effect.
