I did a '68 318 with Hydraulic Clutch into my M37. Also did several other modifications/updates, but still working the kinks out with the TBI Holley Pro-JUNKtion system, and a high RPM overheating.

Hmmmm, it's been a while now Lifer, I have the pictures on file but looking at some of the other conversions I have seen on here there are better options, if I was financial enough at the present I would re-do my setup with a 273cui V8 with an RV cam and single point fuel injection and an overdrive auto tranny or a nice diesel/auto combo, either one topped off with a set of 4.89's and disc brakes (the brakes I already have on all 4 wheels as you know, Thanks Ray & Bob!!) would be the cat's whiskers to me.Lifer wrote:Several people have done a 318 swap. Monkey Man did one and did an excellent job of documenting it. If you ask him real nice, he may e-mail you a (rather long) file describing the job.

Would you like the pics of my conversion then?
Congratulations on the purchase, I am happy with my V8 for the most part, all I need to do really is give it some TLC and a basic re-build to make the most of it (plus that fuel injection if I can get hold of it).

318 swap
I would like to have those pics and information also please. I ran across a 65 318 poly and it is at the machine shop getting cleaned and bored. Now if I can find the bell housing to bolt that up to the stock transmission, the fun will begin! You can email me at info@tannersalleyleather.com Thanks!

lots of questions.
did you adapt to the original tranny or change it?
Was there enough room between the frames to get the exaust in?
is the 318 shorter or longer than the 230?
did you use the original radiator or make modifications to fit a larger one?
How did you deal yith the exaust, cross over or dual exaust?
did you get enough room between the oil pan and the axle? or did you need to make changes there?
How about oil filter and sparkplug access?
I have many more depending on the answers to these.

The theory behind my conversion was that with my limited (almost non-existant) budget I would use as many stock components as possible, the exhaust was a sidepipe on each side affair and the adaption was also suited to keeping the PTO for my winch active. It may be a needlessly complicated adaption but for the sake of a small amount of machining and most all the standard parts it fitted and worked for under $1,000 Aud and that included the engine purchase plus all machining and parts required.
Here's a link to the somewhat low-res piccy's (they are in zipped for so don't panic when your machine warns you of a download), I'll be happy to take better ones for anyone that is interested.
