Idling Problem

Post by Riverrat »

After an engine rebuild I've got her running well again. But she won't idle, unless I keep the hand throttle out a bit. I notice that there seems to be 1 steel line missing (carb to distributor should have 2?) and the throttle linkage is sloppy.

Would sure appreciate any ideas.

Focus on basic. The tube to dist mounts between carb and air filter. It has no vacuum and does not effect running.

Like to run better when choke is used? So it runs lean and relies on the choke to get enough vacuum to draw gas out of the carb. Why?

1. Carb not allowing enough gas in - adjusted idle mixture screw properly (make it richer)? Most common fix.
2. intake valve(s) staying open - you did say it was just rebuilt. Definitely check those intake valve clearances! Luckily, intakes do not burn as fast as hangning open exhaust valves.
3. lousy compression - not likely with a properly rebuilt engine - assuming rings not having too much trouble seating (air leak sounds after shutting down). Was it rebuilt properly right? Folks have different meanings for "rebuilt."

I doubt timing is the problem. Check the above as they are the likely culprits. Let us know how you make out.

I trust the rebuild was good. Guy who did it has done many before and very meticulous.

Will try carb adjustment.

Thanks!!
