New Cross Reference Chart

New Cross Reference Chart

Hello all, I received a phone call from a gentleman in Greece (Kyrianos) who is restoring an M37, who needed my cross reference chart on my m37 website, unfortunately he has no computer, and the library where he uses the computers to access the internet do not allow downloading of certain files. Like my Excel spreadsheet. So I have converted the files to HTML and posted them on my site.

I would like any of you to take a look at the list and feel free to comment on it. I have gleaned this list from many many sources, and have added items that I have used in my restoration as well. That being said, my choice of oil brand and weight may not be the same as yours, but I would like to hear your comments.

Once I have added suggestions-corrections, I will post a link to it from my site, in the mean time here is the link...

B89 brake shoes have been obsolete at NAPA for over 10 years, so have the new & rebuilt 230 water pumps they once offered. I guess it's possible some pumps may still exist laying on a shelf in some warehouse, but doubtful because once NAPA makes a decision to drop an item from inventory, all jobbers are asked to send any inventory of that item on the shelf back in. That cleans the system almost instantly.

I don't understand all the choices you show on some items, clutch components are 1 example. All the transmissions originally used had a 1" diameter 10 spline input shaft. Your list shows at least 1 with a 1 3/8" diameter hub spline. The same is true with disc diameters, all original M37 was 10", your list shows 1 or more 11" disc choices.

Speaking for myself, I could help you with your request easier if I had a better explanation of all this. Our expertise of M37's is based on rebuilding many & what we have seen here. I'm sure many mods exist that we haven't seen here. It's always amazing to see things that have been done to trucks, especially the ones owned by municipalities.

Hi Charles,
That's the exact kind of answer i am am looking for, for instance the B89 brake shoe. I did not know that. As I have said this info was gleaned from many sources, including a cross reference chart I got dated 1979 from a Air Force Service Bulletin, and times they do change. I intend to make changes as they are brought to my attention. I value your input and experience.

Carl, the fan belt you list, NAPA 5L520W, is way too small for my truck, it fits loosely over the fan pulley and the timing pulley, and that's about it. As far as I know my truck is stock. I've got another belt on order, NAPA 5L550W, that the NAPA guys sized from my old belt, but I won't be able to get to it for another week or so, so I'll confirm after I get it installed.

Thanks for all your work in listing these parts, it's been quite helpful.

The 5L type belts are not the correct one, you are dealing with a totally different type of belt than what it should be. I would bet the one you actually need is hanging in the store as we speak.
