Rear Ratio different years

I am thinking about getting a m37 from some of what I read it looks like the early ones had the 5.xx rear and newer I think after 53 or 54 had a 4.88 rear is this correct.
I had a 4.88 in a few trucks and that is about as low as I would like to go. I know I can swap gears but I would rather not do it that way

The 5.83 gearing was in all M37's & B1's as original equipment from the begining to the end of the production run. 4.89 gearing is available today, but was never used originally.

Hello oldmopar, And I have a 19 and 52 M37 with 4:89 gears, and I love it . I zip around town on the pavement but still have pulling power in the field with my Bull gear , and , of course, the low range option...Welcome field travellor

I think the 4.89's were optional in the civi Powerwagons, but like MSeriesRebuild said I believe all M's came stock with 5.83's but that is not saying you couldn't switch them out.

I am looking for a pair of 4.89 ring & Pinion sets, any ideas as to where to have a scratch about??

We can furnish new sets for you, have no idea where a take-out set may be found.

The gear sets are no too common in the States. Just try to find a 2wd 1-ton Dodge of the 1940-50's (Job Rated - Pilot House) with a differential case casting number ending in 241. Many of them used 4.30 instead of the 4.89. 4.30 may be geared too high for our low hp engines. I found a number of 4.30 but no 4.89.

I will keep looking for a takeout set here but down the track I may have to bite the financial bullet and buy new ones, the gear ratio and associated fuel consumption is the prime reason I haven't been driving my truck too much of late.
