Urethane Primers

Post by refit1701 »

I was looking over my previous questions about paint and the replies, as I need to start priming some of these parts.

My question is: How long will the BASF waterborne primer keep the steel surfaces protected with no topcoat? I will be etching them first. As I move through the coming months, I'll have a growing pile of prepped parts and once I get a big enough stack, I'll either paint them myself or have someone do it.

If the normal BASF primer won't last long, will a two part epoxy primer do the job? Whatever I use has to be compatable with the Urethane paint job.

A lot of shops spray urethane so local information from your supplier would be the best bet. As far as 2 part exopy goes, there is a traditional time frame where they can be topcoated without additional prep work. The material I used had a 1hour to 4day window that required topcoating/priming to stick. After the 4 day, the stuff was so darned hard that you needed to go in and scuff the epoxy, lay up another thin coat of epoxy and then apply your primer/final coat.

Ouch. I was hoping for a longer sit time on the epoxy but I'll check on the urethane stuff.

John - decide what brand of paint you like and then stay in that family so that all the finishes are compatible. We used the local PPG guys and used all their products. We found they carry a brand of 2 part epoxy called CRE (corrosion resistant epoxy). Its worth a look. Most guys here use the Gillespi brand.
