Head/freeze plug question

Post by UDTDave »

Newbie question. I noticed a drip of antifreeze on the block when I was changing the oil pan gasket. I traced it up to what I believe is a leaking freeze plug. When I removed the head bolt to remove oil filter bracket in order to get to the freeze plug, antifreeze came out of the head bolt hole. Is this normal? I realized I have to drain the anti freeze from the block to go any further but want to make sure I don’t have another problem. If antifreeze coming out of the head bolt hole is normal, do I need to “seal” that bolt when I reinstall? Thanks

The headbolts extend into the water jacket. You need to use a suitable sealant on the threads. (P2 is suitable)

Thanks Just me. I drained the antifreeze and pulled the bolts and now I see what’s going on. I will put some P2 on the threads when I reinstall. Thanks again.
