I have grit and dirt in the upper dome of the air filter. This is just before the down draft going into the elbow/carb.
What is the servicing process to clean the upper assembly that contains the filter mesh? My guess is something like repeated dunking in kerosene, let dry, pour some oil in the mesh holes, refill bath area??

From LUBRICATION ORDER LO 9-8030.
AIR CLEANER – (Oil bath type). Daily, replenish to bead level with OE, crankcase grade. Every 1,000 miles, clean reservoir and refill with OE as above. Disassemble, clean all parts, refill with OE as above whenever crankcase oil is changed. For desert or extremely dusty operation, disassemble, clean all parts and refill with OE once every operating day or more frequently if required.
OE is oil, lubrication, engine (OE 30 above + 32 degrees Fahrenheit) (30 weight motor oil)
Attached is how to service the air cleaner from Technical Manual TM 9-8030.

Thanks!
Kinda what I figured... back in the day everything was cleaned with varsol, mineral spirits, gasoline or the like.
