Dash power outlet question

Post by Murf »

So we have all seen the screw-capped outlet on the far right side of the dash on our trucks, my question is : what went there? I was under the impression that the Cole Hersee "clam shell" style vehicle/trouble light plugged right in. I have a NOS light and it (and every picture I have seen of one) has the simple male lightbulb base that you can push and turn into any of the vehicle's light sockets for power. the other style was battery clips on the end. I can't find any pics of what terminal end would go into the dash socket as it is a single, hot, female brass connector surrounded by the solid rubber insulator. Can anyone shed some light, maybe post a pic ?

I understand it was a “map light” that plugged in there.
I don’t have any pictures though, but I do recall a discussion either on here or steel soldiers about it. I’ll hunt around and get back to you if no one else does. Otherwise someone else might know more.

It was a single hot wire socket as I recall, I'm also told is exclusive to the 1952 cab (that I happen to have on my 1954 frame).
I too will dig around to see what other info I can find (grabbing David Doyle's Dodge books)....

Ya, it's in an old post I found deep after searching. I tried posting it with this phone.
The bottom line is: the correct light IS the clamshell style, but with the amphenol connector. It plugs in and has the collar that threads down and pulls the connection tight to the socket.

Additionally, John at Midwest has the lights he retrofits with the amphenol connector. He sells them as a set, as he only has a limited # of connectors.

The Amphenol is available from Makertech. (Old school Microphone connector.)
I replaced mine with a multipin Canon connector. Can use it for more than one thing, now.
