Front Disc Brake Kit Installation

Post by NCM »

I’m starting a new thread here for the installation of my brake disc kit from M Series Rebuild (front axle only). This process would probably be a breeze for most people on this board, but I’ll add some pictures of my process in case it helps other newbies at some point in the future.

First step was to install my old wheel studs in the new hubs. In order for them to clear the rotor flange, I ground a 45 degree angle into the flat side of the stud heads heads. I used a 1” by 12” brass drift punch and a sledge hammer to drive them in, taking care to wrap the rotor flange with a healthy layer of duct tape to prevent damage to it. 7/10 studs went in without too much drama, but three of them were tough to seat. I ended up putting the studs in the freezer overnight and using a healthy amount of penetrating oil and sweat.

This is well worth the effort, not too hard to do. It leads to more work--replace the brake lines, dual master cylinder etc

I can't begin to say how much the experience of others, esp with pics, had helped me in my own saga of a restoration of my M37. I doubt I will add disc brakes, but kudos to you and those who post their experiences. NV

06boblee - Agree, who knows what the condition of these brake lines is so I'll likely replace them. Same for the master cylinder, replaced with a dual circuit.

NAM VET - I couldn't have gotten to this point without this forum, so I'm trying to "pay it forward" as much as I can. Hopefully someone else can use this.

Great info guys! I'm not likely to convert to discs but do see the security in running them.

Here is my brake setup. I used Nicopp lines with SS armor-very easy to work with.
