Axle Flange Nut – Source

Post by sturmtyger380 »

I have saved all the axle flange nuts that I took off my axles and wondered if I should clean and reuse them with new split lock washers.

Do others reuse them or replace them? Where do you get new ones?

I got to looking for some and apparently, they are hard to find. Midwest online order system says they are out of them. I can’t seem to find them on the VPW site. Surplus City like on most of their website lines have POR.

Went to McMaster Carr web site and matched up some grade 8 Tall Nuts 3/8 24 threads. But their price per nut is insane. Almost $10 per nut!

I still need to go by the local fastener counter. I’ll just walk right in and ask them, ‘Do you’ all have tall nuts?’

Not too fast there. If you click on the package quantity, I picked 50 per package and got them for .46 cents a piece with shipping.

The Nuts came in the mail on Sat. Comparing them to the original they are a smidgen taller than the OE nuts. Still I will use them over the old torqued down nuts where the one side had the lock washers chew on them.

Time to bolt the axle shafts in and hope they don't pop with the new bearings and preload set.

I gave up on the dual-thread size studs years ago. Now I use 7/16" studs (both ends, one NC, the other NF), no lockwashers, and Nylok nuts.

Stays tight, less oddball nuttage.
