Fuel Gauge Problem
My fuel gauge will register full when you start it.I have grounded the sender to the taillight braket and the gauge has continuity. When I turn the switch on it will show the proper amount thats in the tank but as soon as I hit the floor start it will go to full and stay there.Any suggestions!
When it reads full, the sender is giving the guage a "no resistance" indication. As the fuel level decreases in the tank, the float moves a variable resistor to higher and higher resistance values. When it gets to its maximum resistance the guage will read empty.
If it shows the correct fuel level when you turn the switch on, the sender and guage are both good.
It sounds to me like you have a probllem with a bare wire where there shouldn't be one. When you start the engine, current from the generator is "bleeding over" into the fuel guage circuit. This is overriding the sending unit's input and sending a steady 24 volts to the guage, tricking it into believing you have a full tank. There have got to be a couple of bare wires touching each other somewhere, and one of 'em has to be the wire from the tank to the guage.
