Nice progress, Travis!
@Isaac and all-I just got a heat riser kit from John at Midwest, in case anybody needs a source....

the starter is turning tooooooooo slow
I have a 6 volt one, will it spin faster on 24 volts?
and the batteries are brand new so its not them

Re: its rebuild time
did you somehow get your batteries connected in parallel instead of in series? that would make a biiiiig difference. check with a multi-meter at the main starter terminal, make sure you're getting around 27 volts there. any less and you probably need to charge the batteries. another easy test is to connect your volt meter between the starter housing (not just the frame) and the main positive terminal of the starter, preferably with aligator clips, and then reach down and hit the starter (while making sure you aren't dangling anything in the fan) and watch how much the voltage drops. it will drop some, but if it drops more than about 4 or 5 volts during cranking you've probably got a bad connection at one of the cable ends or terminals

Re: its rebuild time
no, batteries are hooked up right
and all connections are good
my grandpa rebuilt the starter and he said it got very hot several times
I may try the 6 volt starter at 24 volts and see if it turns any faster

Re: its rebuild time
Even if the batteries are connected correctly and the connections look good, performing a voltage drop test at the starter would be a good idea to determine if there are problems in the starter circuit other than the starter itself.
If the starter has gotten very hot multiple times, it might have internal problems. If it's converting the battery energy into heat instead of rotation, then something's wrong.

Re: its rebuild time
the guy I bought it from had all sorts of starter problems with all of his vehicles I was told on one of his jeeps he cranked it over for so long the windings dripped out of it
Thanks,TRAVIS

6 on 24 is no good the light however bright is very short lived. 12 on 24 with a non inertia starter works great.52PLOWERWAGON wrote: I may try the 6 volt starter at 24 volts and see if it turns any faster
my 24v auto light spins very slow on the 52 my buddy terry is always buggin and poken fun at the mil starter...."hand crank would be faster"....but she always starts

Re: its rebuild time
it ran !!!!!!!!!!!!
but it would only run at full throttle
my rubber crank is still in one piece and no rods through the block
so today in going to mess with the carb and figure out why it will only run full blast

Re: its rebuild time
I fixed the carb issue
and ran truck about 2 hours
the cam gives the engine tons of response and makes it very peppy
now it sounds like a HARLEY

Re: its rebuild time
peppy is not often associated with the flathead.
what are the specs on the cam and what kind of compression are you making ?
