Tapped head bolt locations

Hi,
I hope this doesn't sound dumb but what are the locations for the three tapped head bolts according to the torque sequence numbers of the head? The head on my M was removed before I was able to mark the locations.

Unless someone beats me to it, I can provide this later today since I just pulled my head and marked the bolt locations (I'm at work right now).

There are three headbolts with a smaller thread tapped into the head to allow for mounting of brackets on top of the cylinder head. One is for the bracket to hold the oil dipstick tube, and if my memory is correct, the other two are for brackets to hold the vent lines from the distributor and from the brake master cylinder and fuel tank.

That's it. For reference, here's the illustration from that page:



Bolt No. 9 is for the dipstick tube bracket, No.3 is for the clip for the two distributor vent lines, and No. 12 is for the clip for the two lines venting the brake master cylinder and the fuel tank.

I've found that a digital camera is very helpful in documenting everything before and during disassembly, along with a laptop in the shop to review the photos in a larger format when needed during inspection and re-assembly.

But...there's no guarantee that what you start with is correct. The three primary manuals (TM9-8030 Operation and Organizational Maintenance, TM9-1840A Engine and Clutch Maintenance, and ORD9 M37 Service Parts) are invaluable references for determining what goes where and what's missing. Surprisingly, though, the best information isn't always in the most logical manual, e.g. the photo of the cylinder head showing the location of the tapped headbolts is not in TM9-1840A but in TM9-8030 - the equivalent photo on p. 64 of TM9-1840A just shows plain headbolts.

Yup, I was also going by the photo in TM9-1840A with all bolt heads the same. It is a curious thing but it doesn't seem nearly as bad as the various manuals for my Willys MB, WWII manuals were hastily put together, they much improved post war. Thanks again for the assist.
