Setting Carb Float level. Help!
I have the carb all over the table. And.. I can NOT find the specs for setting the float level. Not in any of the documents I have. And I found 2 conflicting ones on the board here.
As far as I can tell, you hold the float up with your finger and it should just touch a gauge sitting across the float bowl edges with tabs sticking down.
How long are the tabs? If I knew that, I could whip up a gauge on the 3D printer and get this poor thing together for the 4th parade.
ANYONE know the spec here?

I've always thought that the float level was too high. It just seemed to run a bit rich to me. Turns out it was about 1/4" low. I checked my spare carb, and it was pretty close to 5/64", so I reset the truck's carb to match. Didn't seem to make much of a difference. Figured that big of a change would be noticeable. All we noticed was that it seemed a little less responsive. Engine still pops out the exhaust when de-accelerating.
Next I'm going to re-check the timing.

Got the truck running good enough to survive the parade..







Pretty much I get it running and let the kids do what they will with it. They seem to have a real blast doing the parade.

Funny, the kids complained about it last year so I figured they wouldn't want to do it again. No problem. But then its "Dad, can we use the truck? Is it running?"
I had to get moving.
In the end..

To check the float level I 3D printed a gauge from the info. I got here. Turns out the float was WAY low. (see picture) The second issue seems to be that the accelerator pump finally wore out. I was running a really old one 'cause the weight was the smaller type that seems to work a lot better. Wore the leather to less than paper thin and I had to replace it. I ended up punching out the retaining pin on the weight and swapping the old weight onto a newer pump piston. It took a day of driving to "break in" the new pump piston but now everything seems fine.
Oh, and I installed a new canvas roof. That brings me to my next question. Do old canvas roofs have any value? 'Cause I was just going to toss my old one out.

How about printing out another float level gauge or two and selling them to me? I'll need one at some point and yours looks hard to lose. Looks like it will fit in the glovebox.
As for the canvas top........what condition is it in? I've seen them sell on eBay with rips and tears for decent money, as some folks find it cheaper to learn to sew than to plunk down $400+ for a new one. Heck, if only sections of it are in good shape you can still make seat covers out of it!

As for the roof. I don't think there's any rips. There's a few small holes and the thread rotted that held on the belt loop things over your head for the straps. So they fell off. The canvas was just getting really old and I figured it didn't have much time left.

Both the tech manual and the ETW1 spec sheet say 5/64".
Attached is some info, plus the procedure to adjust the float.
What's the tolerance on the float tool you printed?
You ought to figure out a price, there are probably more than a few of us that would like to buy one.

Ta-Da! Mr. Independent Assessment here.
I love my float level gauge!! The only change I would make, if it's feasible, would be to make it red like the one in the post.......mine was grey. Reason for the red is it won't disappear in your toolbox or glove compartment. But it is a wonderfully simple tool to have on hand, as it sure beats trying to find something 5/64" thick. I don't even have a ruler that is graduated to 64ths.
I fully expected others to ask you to make more for them.......it just took a little longer than I presumed.

Don't the rebuild kits still come with the gauge? I've got one or two from the rebuild kits floating around my tool crib.

the cup holder is great! i've been printing in ninja-flex, which is a very tough, flexible rubber. too floppy for a cup holder but i'm sure there's lots of uses for it if someone had a need for custom rubber parts.
