Adding wire to J terminal on lights switch for T/S

Post by ashyers »

We're getting close, but I need some help.

I need to add a wire to the J terminal on the light switch to go to my T/S unit (J to 461-460). I don't have an insertion/removal tool for the terminal in the connector. How have do you guys suggest adding the wire. There is an unpopulated pin in the connector and I have removed the nut on the connector's back side. Thanks!

What do you mean "remove the pin"? The female Bendix connector for the light switch has all pins populated, and they weren't meant to come out easily.

One unscrews the backshell then worries the gland rubber back from the connector body up the wires an inch or two with a small screwdriver to expose the solder pockets with the wires in them. You run your new wire into the pin "J" hole and solder it in. Push the gland back down, tighten the shell, and you are good to go.

True, unless you have some really weird plug in your truck....

Dennis,
I was not sure how the connector was assembled. I'm familiar w/ similar MS style connectors that you remove the pins, solder or crimp, and reinsert them, the gland is not free. I didn't know that in this style the gland rubber was able to be moved, but now that I do... :). Thanks for the help, hopefully I'll get the chance to get it sorted tomorrow.

There is a slim chance that we may actually make the Tower Park event next weekend so lights would be nice!

If it is an old connector it can be a pain to get the rubber to move. It can be done. The next time I tried was on a new VWM harness and it was so easy to get the rubber loose.

Got it done a few minutes ago. I used some stuff called Gruvlok to lube things up, it's silicone w/ teflon and is SUPER slippery. Once I worked a bit into the seal and on the wires the rubber gland slid off pretty easily, just took a while to persuade it to get going. Thanks for all the help. I see turn signals in the near future, now I just need to get the kids to work over the weekend...
