Correct Radiator Cap

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

I need a pic of the "correct" radiator cap for the M37. I searched the forum and the web and am still confused. The ORD part number is 6246293. I searched that and the CC number for specs and came up empty. Garbee lists 3 caps in his M37 parts interchange spreadsheet, Stant TR-101, Napa 4-1144, and Gates 31307. All these caps are 4 psi caps. I can't determine the correct psi from the ORD part number, but I found a post from Charles where he said the correct cap is a 7psi cap, but a 4 psi cap would work. I'm pretty sure the original cap was round with no ears. The Gates 31307 has 4 ears (and the wrong psi)....so that's not gonna work. Napaonline doesn't list 4-1144, but the cross reference for the Stant and Gates is their 703-1419. It's round but a 4psi cap. The Stant cap is round....but also only 4psi.

I've got two different caps on my 2 M37s and both of their gaskets are shot. I'd like to find the correct caps for both, but need some help. One of my caps is a round 4psi cap with no chain. The other is a round 4psi cap with a chain to connect it to the radiator. The old early M37 rotting in the woods by my friends house has a round cap with a small pipe spot welded to one side to help turn it. So I'm drawing a big blank on this one. Does anyone know what the original 7psi cap looks like and have a good cross reference for it?

thanks,
bob

I got a new one from Midwest Military 7lb 2 tab MS35840-1.
There are two different ones. One has longer tabs than the other. This is the wide tab one. My radiator was the narrow tab
So I just Dremel tooled the radiator to match. Now I can use either one. (John has both, I was impatient.)
