Fuel tank cover screw size?

Post by choppa »

I just finished installing the freshly re-lined fuel tank into the truck.. installed a brand new sending unit as well as a new fuel filter.
thought I could use the screws I took out of the tank, but most screws the heads are stripped out.

I took back with me one of each screw to match up at home depot : One screw that holds the sending unit, one that holds the fuel tank cover in place.

sending unit, no problem.. its an 8-32 screw.. done

However, trying to match up the screw size that secures the fuel tank cover is another animal.

It appears to be somewhere between a 10-32 or 10-24 and a 1/4-20.. perhaps its a 12-24 screw?

In any case, home depot didnt have any 12-24 screws, so still not sure. Unless the screw I was trying to compare had such screwed up threads? thats entirely possible.

But, it does look bigger than a #10.

anyone know for sure that screw size I need? thanks!

I wont be at cabin again for a few weeks.. nothing is easy wit this build :(

My Parts book show 4 5/16-24 NF by 7/8 bolts. The actual description is Bolt, int-ext-teeth-lockwasher, cross recess truss head, s, CST, 5/16-24 NF-2 by 7/8
A quick look at my parts truck and they look like the bed floor Philips screws...
This is from my CDN parts book, but I couldn't see why there would be any difference. Since they may have been changed, your results may differ.

Choppa, if you're looking for the 10 screws that hold the fuel filter cover in place on the top of the tank, the ORD 9 SNL G-741 book lists them as:

P/N 107316
SCREW, tapping, rd-hd, blunt-pt, sh-met-threads, CST, No. 8 (0.163) x 1/2-in.

These are supposed to have a special washer underneath the head to seal the gap between the screw head and the cover:

P/N CC-1390752
WASHER, antimony-lead alloy, 0.225 ID, 0/375 OD, 3/64 thk.

yes, thats the screw I was needing, the 10 that hold on the fule filter cover plate.

hummm.. #8 eh? thats weird. the screws that hold on the sending unit are #8, and they are definately smaller then the ones I seek...

thanks for looking... but still I am thinking I need a bigger diamter/size for the filter cover... can you double check your book or are you 100% positive you got the right one.

thanks again

Choppa, I believe those are the right screws for the in-tank filter cover. I re-checked my parts book and that's the part number and description, and the quantity listed is 10. Those are spec'd as sheet metal screws, not machine screws, so it's possible that, after multiple disassembly and reassembly over the years, someone has gone to a larger size sheet metal screw if the holes in the tank were stripped.

humm.. got to thinking.. a #8 thread cutting or sheet metal screw IS bigger than a #8 machined screw.. thats it I bet.

thanks so much!!

Choppa, you are right, I had in my mind you were looking for the bed floor cover. I jumped on the post because I had the book open in front of me to respond to a PM question about the Acme pto and didn't read the post well enough.
I did another quick check on those 10 screws and washers that Elwood posted for you. There may be some difference between US and CDN production or age but I have the same listing for the washers but the screws are listed as CC/ 160239 Screw, mach, pan head, cross recessed cat no. 12-24 NC by 1/2 Qty - 10
Its possible they have been replaced by a self tapping type similar to what is used in marine fuel senders. You can always go to a larger size and tap them to fit if the originals don't hold well.

I couldn't find the screw at either of the two hardware stores in town. I tapped them out to the next size larger metric screw, which was only a hair larger if I remember correctly
