Transfer case question

I want to change out my output shaft oil seals on my transfer case. After I remove the driveshaft flanges I want to know if I can just remove the four bolts holding the bearing cover on and change the seals on the bench. Will taking off the bearing cover disturb anything inside ?

With the Yokes off, you should be able to get the old seal out with out removing the bearing cover. Removing the bearing cover and bearing isn't that easy.

The bearing retainers must be correctly shimmed, so if you do remove them, you need to thoroughly clean all old gasket material from both the retainer and the housing, then measure the gap to come up with the proper gasket/shim thickness. It must equal approx. .006" more than the measured gap in order to be correct when compressed.

Also, pay attention to the seal mating surface on the yokes, if grooving, flat spotting, or rust pitting is present, it must be addressed in order for a new seal to stop the leaking. A redi-sleeve may work, in some cases more high tech repair is necessary.
