Steering knuckle rebuild procedure?

Post by Section106 »

What is the steering knuckle rebuild procedure? I am rebuilding a '53-'54 from "scratch" and have the left steering knuckle put back together but I don't have the torque values for the bolts or for the tapered cone preload.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the Canadian eme manual states that the knuckle is to be shimmed with the upper bearing cap bolts tightened 60 to 80 foot pounds creating an oscillating preload of the knuckle at 25 to 30 foot pounds  i think the book is wrong and it should be 25-30 inch pounds.

hope this helps

I've heard of guys running two bearings in the knuckles and that it makes the truck steer easier. has anyone tried this ?

it is 25 to 30 foot pounds. some books say 27 ft lbs to be exact. some run 2 bearings but not recommended for offroad. ther is a reason all closed knuckles are set up with the bronze cone on top. strength and stability.

Cool. I'm not too far off. I'll re-torque the cap bolts and recheck.

Thanks!
