Correct Motor Oil?

Hey Crew.
At the risk of opening an old topic, who can tell me the proper, or at least the most recommended, type and weight, motor oil to put in our M-37 w/original motor.
I'm not a big "synthetic" Guy, but would consider it if that's what it takes??

Something with higher levels of zinc and phosphorus compounds, or add them vie an additive.

I use "Mobile Delvac" 15 w 40 in the dually and I know they make a 1300 Super 10 w 30. I'll do some reading!! I believe it to be a good oil and I can but it local!! 10% discount if it's in stock!
What sort of additive do you like?

Stay away from that synthetic stuff, it will find every nook and cranny to leak out of, unless you have a fresh re-build!

ZDDPlus is a popular zinc additive that is most easily available on ebay. 1 bottle per oil change. I use it in my cummins (flat tappets) and the 51 also.

I think I can get shell Rotella in our stores as well. I actually need to switch my fork-lift over so I can run one oil in everything.
I'll look for the additive as well.

I plan on going with the Shell Rotella 15-40W in everything vintage thing I have. It is the most recommended in all the forums I have been a part of . Get the STP oil treatment in a blue plastic container. Look at the very fine pring on the front of the label. It says ZDDP. And you can get it at Wal--mart. Shell is what I have always used in the International 574 Diesel on the farm and will now use it in both 1954 Super A and the 1950's 200 Farmall.

First of all "Thank You" for shopping at Wal-Mart! Most of you know that's who I drive for. They have been very good to me for the past 10 years. I'm actually a truckdriver with a life!!
Next. I thank you all for the tips! I ran into a bit of a situation with my oil filter, but Charles and I are doing extensive research on that issue! I'll let you all know what we find out.
It seems Wix has two filters that are the same physical size other than the gasket, but wait until we determine this to be true 100%.

Should be Wix 51100. I just hit 2 great deals on e***. First got 4 filters for $4.99 each plus 10.00 shipping and this morning got 6 for $29.96 and free shipping so will have a nice stock for a while.

Congratulations Snow-Dad. You are correct on the Wix number.

After much research and comparison here are my findings.
When I removed the oil filter from my truck it was marked Wix 51006. It was in there and it was working. (just barely)

The Wix # 51006 comes with 2 cover gaskets. The larger of the 2 will fit loosely in the cover and might not leak. (mine did not)

The Wix # 51100 comes with one cover gasket and is noticeably "heavier-duty" and fits the cover much tighter!!

Both filter cartridge canisters are identical but the Wix #51100 comes with the correct heavy-duty gasket for the M-37.

NAPA Gold 1100 is also the correct filter and gasket.

Be careful when buying oil filters on line. I use WIX filters in my truck also and wrote them a while back about the life span of a unused filter and this is what they had to say....

Question : IS THERE A SHELF LIFE FOR UNUSED OIL FILTERS?

Answer : 5 years

The Paper in the filter will get brittle and should not be used if it's 5 years old or older.

IS THERE A DATE OF MANUFACTURE PRINTED ON YOUR OIL FILTERS, AND HOW DO I READ IT. I HAVE ONE OF YOUR #51100 FILTERS IT HAS NUMBERS ON IT BUT I CANT MAKE HEADS OR TAILS OUT OF IT. CAN YOU HELP ?

On most filters there will be in small print a number like this 062111ab1
This is simply a date = 06 - June , 21 - Day , 11 - Year , ab is usually the plant it was made in and 1 is the shift.
