How to test gauges on the dash panel??

My water temperature gauge is not working.
Where do I find the information on how to test
gauges and sending units??

Any help appreciated.

When you say it's not working, how is it not working? Needle points to coldest temp and doesn't move, pegged at highest or jumps around? I tend to replace the gauge first and if that doesn't do it, then replace the sender.

Warren: The gauge is dead. No movement when turning ignition on or turning or off.
New wiring harness with new "spyder".
Oil pressure gauge and battery generator indicator gauge work fine.

Tried another old, questionable temp. gauge. No change.

I found the easiest way to trouble shoot this problem was to remove the wire going to the sending unit , ground and turn on the ignition while your in the cab, If the gauge goes fully to the hot side this tells you the wire and gauge are working and the problem should be on the sending unit side.

Replaced the temp gauge with one from an M series deuce. 120 to 240 degrees
Old gauge is 60 to 260 degrees.
When cold the new gauge does jump a little when the ignition is turned on.
When engine is hot, the gauge is pegged full right at 240.
Does that mean the sending unit is probably working?

Have not had a chance to run Sal's test yet this morning or
the proceedures from Cuz.

Back out in the heat to see what I can find.
