ground up gear in trans

Just wondering if anyone has seen a gear ground up in the trans like this? This pic is looking in the PTO cover from the passenger side. gear is towards the rear of the truck. this a case of the snap ring issue with these ttrans, schyncro, or something different?

The gear in question is for 1 st and this is very common depending on how smooth you are shifting. The gear is a straight cut gear and thus would have no syncro. The countershaft gear does get pretty worn so change the oil every year or so and put a really strong magnet into the lower drain plug to collect these splinters. My tranny on the WC63 has all the gear teeth looking like yours. I got new gears and a countershaft and rebuilt it all back to new. I'll have to be careful shifting it for a while. Terry

thank you for your reply Terry, i have driven the thing about 50 feet since I bought it so it wasnt my fault!! :D I did run it through all the gears when I had it up on jackstands and it seemed to shift smoothly. As far as the magnet goes I put a strong one on the inside of the PTO cover, after some actual road time ill drain it, pull the cover again and see how she looks.

I had my 54 for about a week. Was invited to a Nat. Guard open house about 25 miles away. I drove the distance and on the way back heard some bad sounds from the tranny. Turns out, old style tranny and the synchro exploded. Luckily the previous owner was friend and bought a good used tranny for me. When I got it, I disassembled and inspected, the synchros were ok but the gear teeth looked like yours. Bearings felt good with no pitting or rough spots. I put new seals in and reassembled. I have about 1000 miles on it and still doing well. Just be careful with downshifting to 2nd. Keep good clean oil in it with a magnet if possible. I purchased a complete set of gears for the old style tranny from Ablin. I do plan on replacing them some day but the issue is that there is no synchro available for the old (first generation) transmission. If I had it to do over, I would have bought the new tranny rebuilt and been done with it since all the parts are still available. Good Luck.

thanks CT magnet and fresh fluid installed. Glad to hear it isnt as bad as it looks.
