For Sale Forum Price Patrol

I've been reading some comments lately in the for sale section where some members seem to think the seller is asking too high a price. Lots of forums have restictions on comments regarding member's for sale items. It's one thing to comment on off-site ads but another to undermine the efforts of a member here. While there are no rules against that kind of thing here (at least that I'm aware of) I don't think folks in general like to be told openly that they are asking too much. I think if you must express yourself in such a manner, please take it to the PM system and keep it out of public view. If the asking price is too high, the item won't sell. There are also regional variations in price and ultimately, it's up to the buyer and seller to agree upon. Take a minute and think how you would feel if someone did that to you.....

I would still have to agree that it is bad manners to comment publicly on the forum as to the price being to high. It adds nothing to the WTS offering, I can understand occasional comments made as to how nice the condition or technical accuracy of the items is, and even some that say wish i had the money or that the WTS items was closer to their location.

If you feel it is necessary to tell the poster that the price is to high (in your opinion) doing it by PM or email may be helpful if you can word it correctly and be sincere.

I also find publicly posted "low ball" offer to be a little distasteful, if i was going to make an offer like that i sure wouldn't want to make it publicly.

All this is JMHO and of course other may vary, but that OK

Honestly I have not paid attention to any comments, so I'm not really aware of what went against the grain in the discussion here.

My opinion is this, I never liked to try and tell a seller what his stuff is worth; I ask what he wants for it if I have interest. If I feel it's too high, I thank him and move on. If it's a rebuilt item such as components we build in our shop, one must consider cost of components it took to build it, and time involved. This is a totally different situation. We still get occassional calls inquiring the cost of rebuilding this or that. When you quote what it cost to do that today, the reply, well I only paid $500 for the truck when I bought it. The point this person fails to see is that because they paid $500 for a truck 25 years ago doesn't mean that anything on it can be rebuilt for less than that today. There is reality we all must face. Most likely it was this type of person making a comment about the cost being too high. I had 1 a while back to tell me my quote was way too high, and that he would be calling the owner of M Series to find out what was going on with that. I told him that would be fine, and that the owner would be happy to discuss it with him.

Appreciate the comment Warren... there are some here on forum that feel they must comment on asking price or also ask for photos to be posted. When a seller states 'photos provided upon request', he shouldn't have to explain himself as to why he opts to link out to photos or provide them in a secondary message.
