Building a retro M37

actually it's a 93. I think they changed in 95 with the new body style and coil spring suspension. I like this one. It's one tough diff. Very much wanted by off roaders.

NICE WORK!! I AM CURRENTLY IN THE PROCEDURE OF CLEANING OUT MY GAS TANK TOO. WENT WITH THE ELECTROLYSIS METHOD. GETTING RID OF THE RUST FIRST, AND 2MOR I WILL WASH IT OUT AND PAINT IT INSIDE AND OUT. CAN NOT DEAL WITH THE RUST/CLOAGED FUEL FILTERS ANYMORE, AND BUYING A NEW TANK IS FINANCIALLY FORBIDEN RIGHT NOW.

So tank is clean, mostly. There is still dirt stuff in it but I can't get it all out. I'll put in a in line fuel filter before the lift pump to clean up the fuel. The tank had damage on the bottom around the drain so the only way i could pound it out was to cut a hole in the top of the tank and with a round tipped wooden dowl, i pounded it out. then welded the patch back in. Painted and installed the tank. I saw a member build these neat tube holders on here so i was bound an determined to make some too. And a new plate for the draw straw. here is a few more pics.

Well I finally finished the line brackets and installed the lines and the rear wiring. Also dropped the engine in. Sending tranny out for refresh tommorrow and getting a new starter and alternator tommorrow. I have ordered the Tranny cooler and the sender and the tach sensor. Cab it going out for sandblast and bodywork and paint shortly.





I believe there was a member that installed a flywheel sensor somewhere in forums, but I just can't find where it was. I someone know please send me a link as to where I can go to see the installation. Now off to reseal the transfer case this week.

I used one in mine, if you look at my rebuild thread, you can see where I drilled and tapped the cummins aluminum adapter.

I got the sensor in the scrap bin at work, so, no idea where the part came from, who makes, it, part number etc. Sorry.

I have a sensor coming from Dakota Didgital. But drilling the hole in the adaptor is out because my adaptor is only 1 1/4" thick the ring gear sticks out of it about 1". Thought about mounting it in the inspection cover underneath but it may get damaged there. Gonna have to do some measuring when tranny comes back from the rebuilders. My son says the gas jobs with multiport have the sensor in the tranny bell housing so I may go and see how it is done there. I will post pics as to I do it.

You could always weld a trigger wheel to the "bell" of the crank pulley and mount the sensor to the timing cover in front. Im not sure what the minimum tooth count is for the dakota digital box but i remember from reading the directions it was pretty low. A 36 tooth wheel would probably do the job.

Edit: a 8" diameter motorcycle sprocket would work slick... Center it and weld it to the front pulley!

Well I got some more progress pics. Tranny was rebuilt and transfercase checked and resealed. Now installed and starting to hook things up. My tranny cooler should be here from Griffin with the Dakota Didgital sensor this week. I have drilled a hole in the bell housing for the sensor already. I will build a braket off the 2 bell housing bolts to mount the sensor to. The cab is at the paint shop and I will post pics as to it's progress later. I must say that using hockey tape to do the wiring sure makes it look old school. It's way better stuff than traditional electrical tape. Way sticker too. I will post some electrical pics too. All my guages should be here in about 2 weeks so I can start wiring the dash. I am really starting to get pumped now! anyway, the pics......

A few more parts go on. Some of wanted to know about the fuel sender from Autometer. Here are the pics. The sender turned out to be the exact size for the tank hole, just the bolt holes did not line up so I made new ones.

The cab is painted now but I have no pics as of yet. Not sure of the color yet but I`ll have to get used to it. It turned out a really bright yellow.... Floor is in box liner and also under cab too. Changed my mind on the lizzard skin. I saw a car done in it and I did not like the texture. If in a car, carpet covered it it would be OK, but in this case it is visible. I will post pics of the cab soon.
