I can only speak for Iowa, but what we found was the Iowa DOT simply didn't want to be bothered with an unusual distinction between a Military vehicle being off-road such as a tank, or on road such as a motor vehicle with rubber tires.
After we received support from the "higher-up's" and they realized all we had was another "old truck" the problem resolved itself. I wish all the best of luck to all you Folks in all our states.

Josh I think you would be better served going with option F. You can prove that the truck is modified from it's original configuration. Different motor and transmission and transfercase, different axle, rims and tires, different color paint. It sounds like to me you just have to have a new project so you'de figure kill two birds with one stone. Build a custom frame for your beast and skirt around the MV law. I don't remember if your title says MV on it or not if not why not just get it titled as a 195X dodge power wagon 4x4 truck? That is after all what it is.
M37s are HMMWV in my world!
Re: Just so crazy it might work: Bypassing the Communist WI
That is falsifying the title app in Wisconsin and the fine can get pretty high. The level of mods in his truck make it very easy for him to qualify as a owner fabricated vehicle and be perfectly legal and EXEMPT from the MV rules.I don't remember if your title says MV on it or not if not why not just get it titled as a 195X dodge power wagon 4x4 truck? That is after all what it is.

Re: Just so crazy it might work: Bypassing the Communist WI
It took 4 years and a lot of working with both the local clubs and the MVPA to get where we are now. The current arrangement is a compromise with the hope that it will become better down the road. The two real issues remaining are the modification and commercial use issues. The great bunch of guys headed up by Jeff Rowsam that have been working this issue here in Wisconsin and the new law have done an outstanding job to date and are still in there with their sleeves rolled up to continue pushing for more changes. One lesson learned quickly here is if you wish to continue to live in a free representative government type country then you need to use the legislative system to your advantage and not just scream and hollar at city hall.

Cuz, your last post turned a light on for me. Use the legislature to our advantage.
One reason why they are going after old MVs and not all old cars is there are a lot more antique cars out there, and they would rase a stink if the law was applied to them, and what we need is more stink!
I think we should demand the state restrict ALL old vehicles, ie, any modification from original and it can't be registered. This is only fair, and we know our government is all about fair.
Possibly even a law suit forcing the issue.
When the state finds its self between a law suit and very large and well financed custom car owners, they will then talk to us about allowing modifications, and customization.
This IS the way government works.

Josh, Good try, I'm behind you but...
B(1) States BODY AND FRAME not originating from AND not resembling any previous mfg. vehicle.
Changing the frame wont do it, if it still looks like an M37.
I think the best option is to force recognition of our right to use option F.

Guys,
I'm telling you the more Senators, Congressmen and State Representatives we enlisted along with our local Sheriff we made the Iowa DOT sit up and listen. It's "that squeaky wheel" thing!
My Buddy has been driving his Deuce everyday and the local Cops all wave and a couple have given him a salute! They were also behind this movement!

I tried that. They argued that because it was an MV i couldnt get a hobbyist plate, and because i had modified it i couldnt have a HMV plate. I asked them how the rules applied both ways, how it couldnt be eligable for either, and I asked them what i was supposed to do and was told " we dont know, but thats your problem, not ours".k8icu wrote:Josh I think you would be better served going with option F.
