Letter To My Senator!

Post by Tim Powell »

Good Morning Mr. Courtney.
I know it's a busy time of year for all Americans but I'm asking for your help. I have sent one previous e-mail to you and would really like to talk to you about a situation a Family Friend, Rex Agnew, is having with the Iowa DOT. Mr. Agnew is falling into a depression I can't say I blame him for.
This is about a Military vehicle he purchased in good faith, from a dealer in Ogden Utah with what he was told was a clean title. Upon returning to Iowa, Mr. Agnew was told he could not license his truck. Boyce Equipment in Ogden has been at best, less than compassionate and uncooperative in helping to resolve this issue.
I have been doing research for the Agnew's as they do not own a computer. I have offered everything the DOT has asked for and each time am told they need something else or give yet another reason the truck cannot be licensed. Last conversation I had with the DOT I was told this truck was built for "off-road" use only. This is not so. I have proof. At the same time I was told the engine will not pass EPA emission standards. Again, there is a builder-plate on the engine that says the engine does comply.
Senator Courtney, we beg you for a few minutes of your time. My Friend has a "10,000 dollar vehicle" with a clear title in Utah he cannot drive in Iowa? Sir, we need your help desperately.
These vehicles are part of our American History. My Wife Lori and I own a 1952 M-37 Military truck and love to display it on holidays adorned in the American Flag in honor of my Father, a 40 year Military Man, and all the Veterans who fight to keep this great Nation free.

Tim,

If you write a third e-mail to the Senator please remind him that:

In the 50's when these truck where new the Military drove the M37 and the civilian models, the Power Wagon, all over this great land.

The EPA did not exist when these M37 Military Veterans where new.

Thanks,
Ed

PS Tim, if you could please send me the Senator's contact info. I would like to contact him on your friend behalf. Maybe it would be a idea to post the Senator's contact info on this board and all the other M37 / Power Wagon forums all over this great land. I am sure the Senator loves mail from the People of the United States.

Good letter Tim. Good luck with that. Sad your friend must go through this. It should be a non-issue. Have they tried different BMV's in the state? Here in Ohio no two are alike for sure. When I had my inspection to get my title I had no bed, no head lights, no windshield, no cab top. I was fortunate enough to get a young lass at the BMV who thought me and my truck were the coolest. Here in Ohio vehicles 25 years or older are exempt from emissions standards...so far. It is goofy that it varies state to state. Here in Ohio two counties that are three minutes from my house are exempt from emissions testing for daily drivers, yet my county must have it. Stupid EPA . :x

United States Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa - http://www.grassley.senate.gov/
Hey Crew.
Tom Courtney & Thomas Sands will be the most helpful. Senator Grassley told me he would write a letter to the State of Iowa DOT but to contact the two "Tom's"!! I cannot thank you Guys enough!

I have to say that this really concerns me not because I'm from Iowa (I'm not), but because there are 49 other DMVs out there watching how this plays out (including mine). First it was DoD budget '02 which had a clause of "if we ever owned it, we always own it." That was shot down with the help of the classic warbird guys. Then it was WisDot and their cockamamie idea that personally owned HMVs shouldn't be allowed on their roads followed by Kansas' similar attempt and now, it's Iowa's turn?

Seems to me that these are probing attacks to see who and where any of us will roll over & give in. There are more then a few people in Washington D.C. that are not fans of civilian ownership of anything Military and would like to see all of it taken away (for our own protection, of course   ). Think it might be a good idea if the MVPA took a page from the NRA's play book and started publishing the names of any politicians who are not HMV friendly. That way, we can stick it to 'em at the ballot box. For example; Sen.John Warner (R-Va) & Sen.John McCain (R-Az) are not friends of our hobby.

Matt! Have to sent this idea to the "MVPA"? If not, would you mind if I offered this suggestion to them?

One of our club members is having the same problem with a Humvee that has a clear Nevada title. He tried to tag it in Scottsdale at MVD and they told him that his vehicle was not registrable in AZ.He was told that there is now a law in our state banning military Hummers from road use here! The gentleman took it to another MVD and they told him there was no such law,but the first MVD put a block on his vin number are the only ones that can lift it.He went back to the first MVD the supervisor that was there told him that he was the one that put the block on it and he is standing by his decision to block that vehicle from being registered, when asked what the statute number is the supervisor walked away and refused to work with him anymore! so now he has a vehicle that can not register and is being forced to fish through the bureaucratic red tape getting this resolve because some salary paid government prick decides to play god and make up his own rules fully knowing that he has screwed this guy for his own personal vendetta against ed our military vehicles being on the road.
The owner is now contacting his Senator and everyone he can with out getting all of the other bleeding heart liberals on that band wagon.

hb. Tell your Friend he is not alone. I am a really poor sport when it comes to losing.
General Patten's speach, Americans hate to lose, well that's me!
This is not my fight but it's my Friends Deuce & A Half in question,
I'm taking this on for my Buddy, my Father (40 years Military) and all of you-all.
My little "M" is a toy for my Lori to ride in when the river is froze and we can't go boating.
It will be a cold day in hell when they tell me I can't drive it whenever I want to.
Most of you know I'm still an over the road truckdriver. I used to travel the entire USA. I know stay mostly in the mid-west.
The point is somehow we have always been told "if" the states didn't bow at the alter of the US government,
the first thing you would lose would be your highway funds.
Weren't the Federal Interstates built to move our Military from coast to coast to protect our Nation?
As long as I can remember (35 years of trucking) we've been told "if" you do this and "if" you do that,
we will standardize the laws so one could travel freely and legally throughout the United States of America.
I'm in this fight to the end. Every other week I have to drive my rig so I can give half my check to the "needy",
you know the ones that "can't" work. But that means every other week I'm in this fight.
I don't and won't carry a lap-top in the rig, hell I can't sleep the way it is, I'd never sleep then.
When I'm home, I will not rest! (my spell check is smoking?)

I have not but I have posted the idea on a couple of other MV related sites. You are more then welcome to make the offer to them. Just think we should (as a group) start standing up to this mental micronaughts instead of rolling over and playing dead for them. Remember; they work for us, the tax payer not the other way around.

I would take this all the way to the Govenor's office if I had too. Don't let some buracrat Jack-off dictate to you what you can & can't do (within the law, that is). Like some of you on here, the actions of a few pencil pushers playing "god" with other people's rights just pisses me off to no end.

Hey Crew.
I will call them today! I received a phone call yesterday @ 14:30 from Senator Thomas Courtney (Iowa) concerning my Friend Rex Agnew who cannot title his M35A2C here in Des Moines County Iowa. Senator Courtney is on our side! He asked me to send him EVERYTHING I have in my files about my Buddy's truck and situation. I fired off 35 e-mails and attachments last night to the Senator who promised me he would carry the info to Des Moines Iowa and then on to Washington DC. If you have ever thought about writing a letter, now is the time.
