I just helped a friend remove the engine from his M37 for a trashed bearing. 3 of the 4 motor mounts has ungraded Home Depot bolts. What are people thinking?????

That is one thing they are not doing. What are people thinking?????
Sometimes the motive is cheap price and sometimes the reason is the easy "How to do it" all over the internet where folks with absolutely no technical training get shot gun advice without any detailed specific " watch out for this or that" usually because the guy offering the tid bit of advice assumes the guy asking is not totally ignorant. A simple polite querry before offering advice over these boards would be; Are you a trained technician, experienced restorer or novice? Many of us have been bending wrenches over 40 years and we assume if we get asked a technical question that the person asking must be familiar enough to safely apply the answer we give them. This is not always the case.

Re: You can never assume
They are not ungraded bolts...generally they are grade 5 bolts that are sold at HD and other home centers. Probably the person doing the work thinks a bolt is a bolt right so they grab the right size bolt and put it in instead of grabing the grade 8 bolts in the specail pull out bins. I am inclinded to think that it was probably lack of knowledge about bolts.
M37s are HMMWV in my world!
Re: You can never assume
Well, back in school they said grade 5s had 3 lines on the head. The chinese crap at HD could be anything. I'll assume the same person taht replaced the bolts used all teh blue silicone on the engine taht ended up all over the lower end of the engine....
