Two small felts?

Post by HingsingM37 »

Hey gang,

I am putting my front axle back together. In my steering knuckle seal kits there are two pieces of the felt for the small two-bolt sealing flange. The pictures in my manual show only one piece of felt installed between the two-bolt metal flange seal and the round seal ring over the split seam? Where does the second two hole felt piece get put?? :? Thanks.

The small piece is for the small retainer strip that goes over the seam on the large metal felt retainer ring.

Suggestion, we never use these small felts. REASON, the felt is a viscious absorber of moisture that will let water past the retainer & cause rust on the ball area & worse if you are operating in extreme mud & water conditions. We use a generous application of anaerobic gasket sealer on both the seal retainer & the small strip at the top. We have found less moisture issues to be the result. The main seal being felt also is well impregnated with grease from the CV joint, thus it doesn't take on water like the small strip at the top.
