Trudging Along

Post by m-11 »

The weathers been nice and I've been on vacation so I thought I'd better get back at it. I loaded up the 20ft trailer to deliver the frame, cab, bed floor and sides to a local sand blasting outfit. I told him that I have a lot more work for him if he doesn't bankrupt me on this load. This truck has four layers of paint and it's original coat is the WWII shade of green followed by the OD shiney green with another coat of a different shiney OD green and to top it off the top coat was a thick 6-8 mil mustard looking green. I decided to chemical strip the paint down to the first coat so that the sandblaster isn't spending a lot of time trying to blow through 4 coats of paint. This will save him time and me money. The majority of the truck is on the two trailers.

Truck loosk good and should clean up nicely. It takes time that's for sure.

I'm almost at that point myself. I have about 6 more little things to finish on the cab and I want to get it set back on the frame so that I can test fit the motor and mock up and any mounts etc welded to the frame before I send it off to get blasted. I had set a date for the end of this week when I'm on vacation, but that's not going to happen. I'm shooting for early Sept.

Looks like a solid truck , especially your floor boards. My rig had several coats of paint as well. I think it helped preserve it  . Enjoy your project and keep us posted on your progress.

Well I delivered the cab, frame, and bed parts to the sandblaster yesterday. I might get them back as soon as next week Wednesday. I did point out the frame number so he knows not to blast that area. I told him if this batch of parts doesn't kill me finanically I have a lot more business for him. The worst spot on the cab is of course the battery box area but because the transfer case was leaking it was slinging oil all over the undeside which actualy preserved it a bit. The other area is the rear fenders in the lip between the side of the box and the inner fender.

Well I got my parts back from the blaster. Cost me 300 bucks for the lot. Don't know what everyone else around the country is paying but to me it sounded fair. I'll be taking the rest of the big stuff in next week. We found a repair that was done in the past to the door and instead of bondo it was repaired with lead. Now I know why one door is heavier than the other. Has anyone had luck with getting the right OD green paint through Sherwan Williams? I'm going to use an industrial paint instead of auto paint. I would use Gillespies but I don't want to pay the extra hazardous shipping cost.

Good morning,
I know this is like apples and oranges, but when i got my M from the US Govt,2 years ago, it had several layers of paint, yellow on top.
I had the cab, hood, bed, wheels, and interior sand blasted, all still on the frame. The sand blaster came to me and did all of the above for $300. NYC prices. I guess I got a deal.

With the exception of the wheels and hood it sound like we had about the same amount. So you didn't have the cab separated from the frame? I would think that with all the work invovled in the tear down you would have taken the cab off.

I did not do a frame off, I wanted to use it and have fun. With the exception of the layers of paint the body was in fine shape. Had it blasted, and then I applied several coats of primer, and then the top coat, black fenders, bumpers, and accessories. Green body. Its fine for me, cruise around Rockaway Beach and turn heads. GOOD LUCK WITH YOURS. BOB
