Steering box rebuild

Is there a trick to getting the new lower cover seal over the end of the worm shaft?

A dab of grease on the seal and the shaft, a twisting motion and it should slip on. Be sure it is on before tightening the bolts, dont try to draw it on with the bolts, or you will probably ruin it. (Dont ask me how I know that!)

Better yet, chucked the worm shaft in the lathe and rounded the shaft with a file. The new plate with seal just slipped right on with a 1/4 turn and a little oil. Must have had it off and on half-a-dozen times figuring out the shims with no damage.
