M37 alternator

Post by rtkjmk »

I am in the process of replacing the wiring harnesses on my 1953 M37 , I am thinking about replacing the 25 amp generator with a alternator while I am at it . My one question is what alternator should I be looking for and two, who is a source for the alternator. I want to leave the system 24 volt , just upgrade the charging system . bob k

Bob there are many options out there for.

If you want to keep the GI look then there are several choices in GI issued alternators that will work in the 24 volt and 60 to 100 amp range. Vendors are quite proud of them. I use the 60 amp GI unit which looks a lot like the 25 amp DC generator and has about the same size and weight. It is a simple unit to swap in. There were several manufacturers. The ones I have are Prestolite AMA5102UT. If you want to use this set-up I can provide the wiring changes and the installation photos. The other larger amperage units will often require pulley changes on the engine and add a few external units.

Any automotive alternator in 24 volt volt can be adapted to the mounting and most can be provided with the correct width pulley. Just take your 24 volt 25 amp generator down to your local electric shop and have them build up a 24 volt alternator core that will adapt easily to your mount. The quotes I get here in Wisconsin are in the $100 to $125 range. Custom mountings are easy to build for the light auto alternator and if you spend a little paging time on the early MOPAR restorer's web sites you'll see several offerings for mounts.

Local rebuilders seem rather hit and miss when it comes to this, if you have one that is genuinely interested in helping you; that source will work for you. Finding one that is interested in helping you mount it or figure out how too will likely be slim to none. The 60 amp mil spec units will fit the original bracket, but will be pricey and no over the counter parts will be available should the need arise

We have used a bunch of Delco 10SI units, easy to equip correctly and easy to adapt to the original bracket without bracket mods, so you could go back to the original set up at a later date should you desire. Parts are readily available.

I can supply components or you can source locally. If we can help, contact us next Monday as we are closed for the holiday until then.

I bought an alternator form Paragon in Florida. It was a used one off of a Deuce and a half. I don't recall exact price but it was real reasonable. I don't have their info at hand but maybe someone else knows. Mounts fit same If you got that way you just do away with the voltage regulator mounted on the firewall.

Good Luck.
