Fuel/Carb/Disti problem
OK - I changed the points and condenser. Previously converted to civy Ball and Ball w/o Governor and civy disti. I could not get RPM's above 1500 until I changed the points. Now, I can get it to 2500 RPMs but the RPM's drop down and then back up over the course of a few seconds - oscillating RPM's. What am I looking for. Has new civy fuel pump as well.

Re: Fuel/Carb/Disti problem
When you installed a civ. dist. did you change the oil pump to a civ one or you still running the military pump?

I don't know Carter. The engine came out of a Donor M and ran fine in that truck. Compression between 112 and 120 across all 6. I dropped it into my frame off chassis but I've never checked to see what oil pump is in there.

Re: Fuel/Carb/Disti problem
My truck did that when I installed my new carb.
It was definately the governor that needed adjusting in mine.

Stu - You live in Edinburgh? My daughter was there last summer for the Fringe Festival. I'm jealous you have a matching '52 trailer. Anyway, this is not the ETW1 - It's a civy carb with no Governor.

I am 3 hours or 140 miles North of Edinburgh, in Aberdeenshire.
I hope your daughter enjoyed her time in the Capital.
My trailer has been converted into a sleeping compartment for my "weekends away" with the lads

Cheers

Re: Fuel/Carb/Disti problem
THE MILITARY DISTRIBUTOR HAS AN OFFSET "BLADE" AT ITS BOTTOM WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE OIL PUMP. HENCE THE OIL PUMP HAS AN OFFSET "SLOT" FOR THE DISTRIBUTOR TO CATCH. UPON REMOVAL OF THE DISTRIBUTOR UNIT YOU CAN VISUALLY CHECK THOSE TWO(WILL NEED A FLASHLIGHT TO SEE THE PUMP END), AND IF IT IS SO, THEN YOU KNOW YOU ARE RUNNING THE MILITARY SETUP. THIS WAS MADE THAT WAY, SO IF FIELD REPAIRS WERE NECESSARY, THEN THE DISTRIBUTOR WOULD BE REATTACHED ONLY IN THE SAME WAY IT CAME OUT. AS FAR AS I KNOW, CIVILIAN DISTRIBUTORS AND OIL PUMPS DO NOT HAVE THAT OFFSET, RATHER THEY ARE IN THE MIDDLE. I WOULD ASSUME THAT THE TWO DESIGNS CAN NOT BE INTERCHANGABLE DUE TO THIS DIFFERANCE, BUT I REMEMBER READING IN THIS FORUM ABOUT PEOPLE WHO DISCOVERED THAT PREVIOUS OWNERS OF THEIR RIG HAD MANAGED TO "SCREW" EVERYTHING IN PLACE, AND THIS SETUP IS NOT CORRECT. BACK TO YOUR PROBLEM, SINCE ALL YOU DID TO YOUR TRUCK WAS CHANGE THE POINTS, AND THEN YOU EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE, THEN I WOULD SUSPECT THAT THERE LIES YOUR PROBLEM. IF IT HAD TO DO WITH THE CARB, OR THE FUEL PUMP WHY DID IT CHANGE REACTION AFTER YOU CHANGED THE DISTRIBUTOR INNARDS? I WOULD FIRST CHECK MY FUEL SUPPLY. AND THEN ATTACK THE DISTRIBUTOR, PLUGS AND WIRES. THE CARBURATOR WOULD BE MY LAST TARGET. GOOD LUCKSierraM37 wrote:I don't know Carter. The engine came out of a Donor M and ran fine in that truck.
