IN TANK FUEL FILTER

HELLO ALL, DOES THE IN TANK FUEL FILTER OF THE M37 STILL EXIST AS A NEW REPLACEMENT ITEM? IF YES, WHERE CAN I GET ONE? IF NO, IS THERE A SUBSTITUTE FOR IT, OR DISCARD IT ALL TOGETHER? THANX IN ADVANCE :)

Hi Sotven,
I just bought 2 from a friend, that came from REO trucks with gas engines. I can get you the number, it might help your search. These filters came mounted to a longer pipe, but I am going to take them off the pipe they came on and put them right onto the M37 pipe.

The filter element ORD# 7351316 is the same element used in the M38 and John at Midwest Military stocks them.

One more viewpoint; I don't use the in tank filter elements simply because of the aggrevation of having to disconnect the metal lines and remove the access cover from the tank everytime the filter needs servicing. Better quality in line filter elements are available these days locally as over the counter items, and much less trouble to change out. You can go with a spin-on element for even easier and more convenient servicing if you desire to spend just a little more initially.

HMMMM... WHAT IS A "SPIN ON" ELEMENT? I DO HAVE AN IN LINE FUEL FILTER RIGHT BEFORE THE PUMP, BUT IT IS THE DISPOSABLE KIND. AND I THOUGHT THAT THE IN TANK WAS NECESSARY TO BE THERE IN ORDER TO KEEP THE LINE CLEAN?

You only need one filter before the fuel pump. The in tank filters did their job quite well for 40 years. You should only run one filter. The modern spin ons are nice looking and easy to service. If you wish to run a modern spin on then just remove the in tank filter and fabricate a pickup tube that will have a U bend at the bottom so it only picks up fuel about a 1/4 to 1/2" off the tank floor.

I WENT ON LINE, AND FOUND OUT WHAT A SPIN ON FILTER IS. MY FATHER'S DIESEL HAS A SUCH, AND I FIND IT VERY PRACTICAL. EASY TO REPLACE, WATER DRAIN AT THE BOTTOM, (WHAT DID YOU SAY, NO WATER IN TODAY'S FUELS? :lol: LOL) AND A PRIMING PUMP ON TOP. I DID NOT THINK THEY WERE MAKING THEM FOR GASOLINE APPLICATIONS ALSO!!! NICE. THANK YOU FOR STEERING ME TO THE RIGHT DIRECTION. :)
